TOWN OF FRANKLIN

CONSTRUCTION WASTE REDUCTION

TIPS & RESOURCES

New construction, renovation and demolition projects generate over 20 percent of

Vermont's trash.  Additionally, Vermont has some of the highest waste disposal costs

in the country. The purpose of the information in this brochure is to help you

learn how to recycle and reuse materials to divert them from the waste

stream during new construction, renovation, and demolition.

PLANNING & STRATEGIES

Each time you throw away your project's waste you are paying twice for materials:

*First to buy them

*And again to throw out what you don't use

Cost Effective Planning

Use ANR C&D Waste Reduction Plan download @ www.anr.state.vt.us/dec/wastediv/recycling/CandD.htm

*Keep it simple

*Involve all personnel

*Target materials with potential for reuse & recycle

*Plan for separation, collection and storage

*Identify available markets for reuse & recycle

Reduce waste by preventing it from being generated in the first place:

*Use standard dimensions in building design

*Use techniques such as increased spacing of joists and studs and in-line framing

*Use green building materials such as products with recycled content and used materials.
